Even though she is not a knitter, my sister knows how to check out my designer page on Ravelry. (I think she does that just to see if I've truly been as busy as I had claimed to be!) Her most recent view was yesterday, when Interweave posted the preview of the latest issue of Knit.Wear, Fall/Winter 2013.
When I saw Susan's name come up on my cell last night, I was sure she would tell me how surprised and excited she was to see that I actually had two sweaters in the issue. No, instead the conversation went something like this:
"So, I saw you've got two designs in the same issue." (Horizontal Cowl Pullover, above, and Cabled Bands Pullover, below)
"I know, right? Lots of deadline knitting that was! Good thing one of them had a 2 1/2 stitches to the inch gauge."
"Ok, well, I don't know how that computes, but I called to tell you that I actually feel a little bad."
"What? Why?" I say, a little afraid that maybe she doesn't like something.
"Because one of them has more hearts than the other; you know, like when a parent has a favorite and everyone knows which one it is and secretly feels bad for the one that it isn't?"
"Speaking from experience?" I--her only sibling--ask, not sure which one of us thinks she had the most hearts when we were kids.
Before the conversation devolved into something on the order of "You were too Mom's favorite," I remembered a comment Franklin Habit made at a class of his that I was lucky enough to get into at Vogue Knitting Live last year. It was his "Photographing your Fiber" class, and he joked that the right FO photo (should that be FOto?) can help give an uptick to those Ravelry hearts, which, of course, elicited a knowing chuckle from all the heart trackers in the room.
I'm not sure my sister can appreciate the whimsy of the Rav heart, never having lived in a knitter's world pre- or post-Ravelry. In fact, I think she feels so bad for the "less loved" sweater that she's setting up a Rav account right now so she can heap some love onto its page.
I do think you were Mom's favorite! I love both sweaters equally <3
