One thing most knitters agree on is that when a random group of us get together--no matter how diverse the background, age, skill level, thrower or picker--we're a pretty welcoming and friendly lot. So many of the attendees at Vogue Knitting Live in Chicago last weekend were just that: I was travelling alone, and yet ended up eating not one of my nine meals by myself. Someone was always extending an invitation to join her plans. I can't say that about the many other similar-sized industry functions in my previous business life.
I remember one of the first knitting events I ever attended. It was a magazine trunk show in Manhattan in a tiny yarn shop/cafe that could accommodate only about 25 people. Because of subway trouble, I arrived late to find just one awkwardly placed seat open. The woman next to that chair got up from hers and asked others around to help make room so that my chair would have a better view. How nice, right? We chatted a bit about knitting and then the presentation started. Before I knew it, she was making her way to the front to present the samples of the two designs she had in that current issue. So funny that she didn't mention that, I thought. But now I realize that whether you're a knitter of one-skein wonders, a designer, a yarn collector with dreams of knitting the whole stash, or an LYS owner, there is a friendly shorthand that occurs among those of us who get a thrill out of the mere thought of what yarn and needles can do.
So, who was that lovely and gracious designer? None other than Cathy Carron. The most recent time we met up, last weekend, wasn't actually in person. It was our fiber stand-ins, who followed each other down the runway at the VK fashion show. In the video below, see our two designs (plus a few others from the Vogue Knitting Holiday 2012 issue) in action.
